 Dear Future Truman Parents,

The college search is an exciting yet complex time as you and your child look for a university with just the right mix of support and opportunity to match their dreams. I have worked in college admissions and enrollment management for over thirty years, my two sons have graduated from college, and my daughter and I spent this past year in the midst of the college search. I know well the range of emotions and mind-boggling sorting of information that you’re experiencing.

Although I work here, Truman rose to the top of my daughter’s college selection list for many reasons. Simply put, I don’t believe the Truman Experience can be mirrored anywhere in the country and she is recognizing that advantage. The experience is a powerful combination of students like your child –talented, prepared, involved- working with a stellar faculty and caring staff in a location away from a major metropolitan area. What I see happen here at Truman is almost magical. Nearly all of our 5,600+ undergraduates live in the residence halls or within walking distance of our campus. The synergy that occurs in our small classes spills out onto the campus and into our close-knit community of Kirksville, creating a unique and incredibly substantive experience.

The opportunities for student engagement and leadership are innumerable and students leave Truman having been changed in ways they could never imagine. Most take advantage of expanding their horizons with study abroad, conducting one-on-one research with a professor, building professionalism with an internship, and/or providing service in myriad of on and off-campus venues. Academic coursework is rigorous but students graduate at a higher rate than from any other public university in the state and are prepared to compete in some of the finest graduate and professional schools and for demanding positions in a competitive world of work.

We welcome you to come to campus and talk with faculty, staff and students and hear the unique stories of their Truman Experience. As a parent, I understand the critical role you play in advising your child through the college decision-making process. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance in this exciting, yet sometimes stressful journey. I am confident, if the path leads your child to Truman, they will discover just how wonderful it is to be a Bulldog!

Cordially,
